Axia Institute Participates in the AIPIA World Congress

Dr. Aliakbarian Participates in Packaging Challenge

Axia Institute researcher Dr. Bahar Aliakbarian, recently participated in the packaging challenge at the Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA) World Congress event in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The 2019 Congress, Disrupting Your Brand’s Packaging with the Latest Active & Intelligent Technologies, addressed current packaging trends and disruptive advancements in the field.

The Packaging Challenge is a staple of the AIPIA World Congress. It allows packaging technology providers to showcase their most innovative ideas to brand owners. At the 2019 event, 13 different packaging technology providers pitched their best smart packaging ideas to Abbott, a global healthcare products company whose mission is to improve healthcare through technology. The Abbott Connected Health Challenge  specifically sought to identify digitally connected packaging solutions for developing and emerging markets.

The challenge called for a one-click solution connecting medical packaging to smartphones. Proposed solutions had to align with the EU Falsified Medicines Directive and comply with the Global Data Protection Regulation. Key themes were categorized under the following headings:

  • Trust & Credibility
  • Time is Precious
  • Digital Sustainability
  • Circular Health
  • Embedding Long Term Value
  • Integrated and Cost Effective

And here’s the hard part; each pitch also had to be completed in under 4 minutes!

Dr. Aliakbarian presented the Axia Institute’s entry, Digitally Connected Packaging for Rapidly Developing and Emerging Markets Case of Pediatric Nutrition. This innovation outlines a connected infrastructure that lets consumers view the provenance of prenatal supplements, infant formula and toddler food. Axia’s proposed “SIMILAC” platform encompasses the following elements:

  • Simple
  • Intelligent
  • Manageable
  • Improved
  • Low cost
  • Adjustable
  • Connected

The goal of this platform is to build consumer trust and create end-to-end product visibility. Connecting the consumer with the brand owner allows the brand owner to receive consumer data and in turn, better manage the quality of its product. The connected nature of the platform also provides brand owners with better visibility of their product across the value chain.

This additional visibility is especially useful while overseeing product recalls, and this innovation promotes circular health through smartphone engagement with consumers. Most importantly, the platform can be used across the globe to promote the important issue of pediatric nutrition.
