Congressman Moolenaar Visits the Axia Institute
U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar (MI – 4th District) recently visited the Axia Institute in Midland, MI, to learn more about the Axia Institute and some of its current research initiatives.
As part of his current efforts to address the nation’s opioid abuse epidemic, Congressman Moolenaar was interested in learning about some of Axia’s research related to smart packaging.
“The opioid crisis has hurt thousands of families in Michigan and there is more that can be done to prevent abuse of these drugs with smarter packaging,” stated Moolenaar. “That’s why the groundbreaking work the Axia Institute is doing is so important. It has the potential to prevent opioid abuse and save lives, and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next,” Moolenaar concluded.
The Axia Institute’s research in this area focuses on sensor-based packaging and ensuring that the medications are only used by individuals to whom they are prescribed. “This research will not only help prevent unauthorized access to the pill bottle itself, keeping prescription meds out of the hands of people who don’t need them, but can help promote medication adherence,” according to Axia Institute principal investigator, Dr. Bahar Aliakbarian.
“We were pleased to host Representative Moolenaar in our offices so that he could learn more about some of the exciting research we are conducting at our Institute,” stated John Hatfield, director of marketing and communications for the Axia Institute. “Our researchers are exploring groundbreaking new technologies and it’s encouraging to know that Congressman Moolenaar wants to engage with academia to help find solutions for this pressing problem,” Hatfield stated.
