Mark your calendars on October 23rd and October 24th for Axia’s annual Value Chain Summit: Sustaining Success – Building a Resilient Value Chain Ecosystem hosted in-person or virtually by the Axia Institute. 

During this year’s summit, we will explore sustainability from multiple perspectives. We’ll start by discussing the importance of building risk and resilience into value chains to ensure they are flexible enough to endure marketplace disruption. Our session will continue as we deal with sustainability and the ways that different industry leaders are making certain their value chains are operating with an environmental focus across numerous dimensions to ensure success in the long-term viability of their organizations.

Day 1 Overview
Value Chain Management Learning Opportunity
October 23, 2023

The first day will begin with a learning opportunity presented by Stanley Griffis, the Bowersox-Thull Endowed Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Michigan State University. Dr. Griffis’ presentation will focus on Risk and Resilience in the Value Chain and a discussion on why sustainability matters for leading organizations.

Axia Lab Tour

4:15 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

 

Location: The Axia Institute, 1910 W. St. Andrew, Midland, Michigan 48640

At the conclusion of the value chain management learning opportunity, attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Axia Lab, Axia’s independent third-party RFID testing environment.

On Monday evening, Axia will hold a Welcome Reception at the H Hotel. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served, as we celebrate the Axia Institute’s 10 year anniversary.

Michael Witt

Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer at Northrop Grumman

Dr. Mike Witt is vice president and chief sustainability officer for Northrop Grumman Corporation, a technology company focused on global security and human discovery.

Witt is responsible for the company’s environmental and sustainability programs across the business. These programs include enterprise-wide business strategies for carbon reduction, resource efficiency and materials management, helping to minimize the company’s environmental impact and advance environmental sustainability across the sectors.

Witt brings decades of environmental, health, safety and sustainability expertise to Northrop Grumman. Most recently, he held a number of key leadership positions with Dow Inc., and led their strategy for carbon reduction, climate change and materials sustainability, and played a key leadership role in building a $1.5 billion cross value chain global initiative to end plastic waste in the environment. He also represented the chemical industry in negotiations with the United Nations on a new global plastics treaty.

Witt holds a doctorate in environmental engineering from Michigan State University, a Master of Business Administration from Northwood University and bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Michigan.

Supply Chain Management Development Tools for Planners

11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Dr. Dave Closs, the John H. McConnell Chaired Professor of Business Administration in MSU’s Broad College of Business will share insights gathered from his extensive teaching which has focused on the topics of marketing, logistics, and management science.

In this session, Dr. Closs will address development of Supply Chain Management tools and the real- world application of these tools and the business advantages that can be gained through integration.

Networking Lunch and Member Recognition

EROI of RFID Implementation in the Pharma Supply Chain

1:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Antonio Rizzi, Professor Industrial Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the University of Parma, will speak on the sustainability of RFID using an LCA framework. Deployments of RFID technology have been shown to have positive effects on the environment and Dr. Rizzi will examine these impacts during his discussion.

Moderated Panel Discussion: Standards- Based Sustainability

1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

   

Sustainability has been driven by a number of factors including the implementation of new standards across multiple industries. This session will feature a discussion with Jeanne Duckett, Sr. Director of Food Technology Solutions at Avery Dennison, and Tracy Nasarenko, senior director of Community Engagement at GS1 US.

Axia Institute –
RFID Feasibility for End-to-End Phrmaceutical Traceability

2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

During our final summit presentation, Bahar Aliakbarian and Ethan Claucherty of the Axia Institute will share the findings of Axia’s recent work demonstrating the viability of RFID as a way to track prescription medications across the pharmaceutical value chain.
