Position Summary

Overall Job Description:

A Laboratory Technologist position is available at the Michigan State University’s Axia Institute in Midland, MI.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and responsible laboratory technologist to conduct pharmaceutical and food smart labeling performance testing. This role involves day-to-day chemical, physical and mechanical testing working with nutraceuticals, pharmaceutical, and food packaging. As the selected candidate, your responsibilities will include setting and preparing routine experiments as directed, instrument calibration and maintenance, work order follow-up, producing reports to the supervisor, and billing. Periodically, information on your research and laboratory work will be presented to others at laboratory meetings, journal clubs, industrial stakeholders meetings, and seminars. In general, the Technologist will help the organization ensure maximum productivity and visibility.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Technologist’s primary goal is to set up the laboratory and testing. This person must carry out the work scope, milestones, deliverables, and achieve the targets on time, communicating the accomplishments to the supervisor. Some of the primary day-to-day responsibilities include: 

  • Conducting experiments through standards and procedures.
  • Managing the workflow/work order, creating testing schedules, calibration, testing, and testing facility (instrumentation) maintenance.
  • Ensuring that deadlines and quality standards are met based on the guidelines provided by the supervisor.
  • Reporting performance to the supervisor as required.
  • Coordinating daily tasks according to priorities and plans, making changes when necessary due to weather, supply, delivery, and personnel.
  • Following the required protocols (testing procedures, PPE, safety gears) to meet laws, regulations, best practices, and safety standards.
  • Ensuring the safe use of tools, machinery, and equipment.
  • Collaborating with the supervisor to develop project requirements and quality standards. 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards.

  • Four-year degree, preferably Engineering degrees in electronics, material science, or mechanical
  • Expertise in Radio Frequency Identification is a plus
  • Data acquisition and calibration
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for tracking work progress for clients and others involved
  • Knowledge of organization policies
  • Ability to maintain a consistent testing protocol
  • Computer skills (Microsoft programs) and graphics

  • Technical skills to interpret results and present findings
  • Time management and multi-tasking skills to meet deadlines, ensuring deliverables are completed on time

Post-Doctoral Researcher Position for the Axia Institute: Delivering Value Chain Solutions. The position is to be located in Midland, MI.

Particularly, the successful candidate will collaborate with the stakeholders involved in the Healthcare and Food and Agriculture Supply chain. The Associate Researcher will work collaboratively with other team researchers and will supervise students as well.

This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term position with reappointment contingent on satisfactory performance and available funding.

    • Design, execute, and record laboratory experiments; apply standard scientific protocols to experiments, research, and improve current methods and evaluate innovative techniques
    • Draft, write and edit scientific reports, papers, journal articles, and abstracts
    • Help write grants and compete for funding
    • Manage the workflow/work order, create testing schedules, calibrate, test, and instrumentation maintenance
    • Ensure that deadlines and quality standards are met based on the guidelines provided by the supervisor
    • Report performance to the supervisor as required

Required Degree

Doctorate -Supply Chain Management, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field

Minimum Requirements

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Supply Chain Management, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • A strong record of peer-reviewed publications is preferred, including the first authorship
  • Research experience in asset-tracking technologies including but not limited to barcoding, Internet of Things (IoT), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), or Near-Filed Communication (NFC)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to develop manuscripts, and assist in the preparation of grant proposals and presentations
  • Computer skills (Microsoft programs) and graphics
  • Work order management skills (prioritizing tasks) to meet organizational deliverables
  • Technical skills to interpret results and present findings
  • Time management and multi-tasking skills to meet deadlines, ensuring deliverables are completed on time
  • Ability to work in a team as well as an individual
