Healthcare Consortium Meets in Detroit

May 7, 2025

A business meeting with men at a table. On April 30th, Axia brought together more than 20 member companies from the Healthcare Consortium at the MSU Detroit Center to review recent research and project accomplishments, and to brainstorm future research that will advance patient safety and traceability solutions. Highlights include:

RFID End-to-End Pilot Phase 2 Study

Axia’s Healthcare Consortium heard the preliminary findings of the soon-to-be-released RFID End-to-End Pilot Phase 2 study. The study tested the robustness and interoperability of RFID in operational environments, aligned with GS1 standards and the U.S. FDA’s Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) requirements. Phase 2 conducted a real-world demonstration of tracking and tracing pharmaceuticals, collecting data from RFID readers at key locations and uploading data to a cloud-based Observer Platform developed by Axia.

iRx: Drug Information Anytime, Anywhere
The group also saw a demonstration of iRx, a web app that provides drug information anytime, anywhere. iRx, accessible on cell phones and other mobile devices, provides real-time prescription and over-the-counter drug information, including authenticity, dosage, side effects, interactions, and warnings, which are typically found on paper leaflets. iRx is in beta, with limited access during the pilot period.

iRx is part of a two-phase solution from the Drug Information Sharing Initiative, which began in August 2023 with the vision of providing convenient access to drug information anytime, anywhere, for healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers. Phase II is an innovative print-on-demand program for patients who prefer information in a paper format.

TIERS: Tagged Item Electronic Repository for Supply Chain Applications

Axia also gave a preview of TIERS, a database of RFID tag performance tests conducted by Axia. This transparent, neutral database houses all non-proprietary data from our item-level tag validation tests performed to validate use across different environments. Axia members will be able to search the database, saving time and money as they adopt RFID into new industries.

In 2018, Axia brought together pharmaceutical manufacturers and stakeholders to identify collaboration opportunities to meet the serialization requirements for DSCSA. The group has met regularly since 2021, focusing on revolutionizing patient safety. In addition to the projects mentioned above, the Consortium studied Data Interoperability in the Healthcare Value Chain: A Systematic Literature Review in 2022. The consortium also identified RFID as a feasible solution to the traceability requirements of DCSCA, paving the way for the creation of Axia Lab in 2021.

The consortium meets virtually throughout the year, and in person in April and October.
