PRESENTING
From Pilot to Practice: RFID’s Role in Pharma Supply Chains
Wednesday, May 7

On Wednesday, May 7, Axia’s Dr. Bahar Aliakbarian, Senior R&D Director, and John Hatfield, Executive Director, presented at RFID Journal Live 2025. They presented in the aptly named “Utilizing Cutting-Edge Solutions in Healthcare, Food and Pharma” track Axia’s newest research, “From Pilot to Practice: RFID’s Role in Pharma Supply Chains.” They shared key insights from Axia’s real-world pharma end-to-end RFID pilot project, and discussed the critical role of stakeholder engagement in successful RFID adoption. RFID technology offers far more than just traceability in the pharmaceutical supply chain—it enables real-time monitoring, rapid identification of exceptions, and proactive resolution of issues as products move between locations.

To better understand supply chain visibility, GS1 US led a workshop titled “The Evolution of Data Carriers and EPCIS to help meet Supply Chain Regulation in Food, Pharma and Retail.” In the workshop, participants are led through a mock cold chain supply chain, where they must record the necessary data and tracking events on paper. John and Bahar mimicked a tomato supply chain. This is a workshop GS1 conducts regularly, as it helps suppliers gain a base knowledge of GS1 standards and the complexities of capturing this process.
